So we finally visited the ocean! We met with my uncle and his family and visited two eateries. One was a sashimi (hye) boat, where they take freshly caught fish from boats and fillet them on the spot! For the first time, I (my sisters were uncomfortable with these) tried sea anemone, sea cucumber, noolehmi (spotted belly greenling) and ooruk (rockfish) sashimi. They were very different textures and tastes, ones that can't be described with words. They were very unique tastes, and all together, made for a very nice premeal. (Keep scrolling down, there are more words after these pictures)
Afterwards, we visited the crabhouse and ate spicy crab soup and octopus sashimi! Now the strange thing about octopus sashimi is it moves even after it is cut apart. It fights one's attempts to pull it off the plate and resists the oil. The degree of mutilation is about one inch long slices of legs. It squirms a bit in your mouth, but the taste is fantastic! A bit chewy but extremely fresh. The crab was cooked in a spicy soup, and the crabs carried a huge amount of eggs inside of their bellies! The soup and crab was fantastic with a bit of rice, definitely a taste you can only find by the ocean.
Finally, we went to see a ketpul, or mud beach, off the coast. This is basically just a beach with mud instead of sand. Under the mud are countless crabs and shellfish for people to dig up and eat later! The mud on this beach was under rocks, which made traveling a little easier, and we timed it just at low tide when the mud was accessible by foot. Jenny and Michelle were able to catch a fish that was lying on the rocks, and we were able to see people digging the mud for the shellfish. It looked like much work, but in the end, the meal would probably be worth it!
